Will winter tires make enough difference?

I love my 2001 Saab 9.5 SE Wagon but it doesn't perform very well in the snow. We managed OK while we were in New Jersey (not too much snow and it is plowed/driven on quickly). But we have moved to CT recently and our new house is way up on a hill that requires a bit of a drive up a long, windy road. I was thinking of selling the Saab and getting an AWD vehicle (volvo, subaru) but then someone suggested that perhaps putting a good set of winter/snow tires on the Saab would make all the difference in the world (we have all season tires). I've seen the threads on which snow tires to buy, but I am just wondering if swapping out tires will do the trick.......
