Background: Previous car was a heavily-modded 9-3SE Convertible - easily faster than a stock Viggen. Current car is a 2005 S60R (wife has a 2006 V70R) and agree mostly with Jon's comments.
Overall, I'm completely thrilled with the S60R. Easily modded to 350+HP, AWD, big Brembo brakes, gorgeous interior, big 18" wheels & tires, killer factory stero and the best seats this side of my old 9000 Aero.
The only downsides have been the horrible (and I mean truly horrible) turning radius and the overall "heft" of the car (3,693 pounds). I disagree that stock v. stock the Viggen handles better as you still are "stuck" with a FWD platform v. AWD. The Viggen would definitely feel lighter on its feet but the R with AWD simply carves a corner once it takes a set and power is applied. Being able to punch it halfway through a corner and have the car simply keep going in its intended direction has been a plus!
On the highway, a stock Viggen would definitely give a stock R a run for its money but the R would ever so slightly pull ahead (IMHO). I've run a few Viggens from a dead stop and a roll and the cars are pretty much even once you get past the Vigen's traction/torque steer issues.
Both are great cars and I do miss my Saab!
Regards,
Derek
