I feel very strongly that mandrel bends are absolutely necessary. when the cross section of the tubing changes the gasses have to accelerate and decelerate and compress and expand as they go through the system.
the best flowing system will let the gass flow in an even manner and the only changes in velocity will be because of the cooling of the gases, which naturally occurs, decreasing the density and gradually decreasing the flow velocity until it exits the tailpipe.
Causing the flow to accelerate and decellerate takes energy and impedes flow, this happens no matter what size the pipe.
I know someone will argue with me but I say a proper mandrel bent 2.5" system with larger radius bends will out perform any 3" system mandrel or otherwiswe because in the saab applications there are some pretty restrictive bends and they can be better dealt with when using 2.5" tubing.
