Aero Exhaust question(s)

Greetings,
Hope your Christmas seasons are off to a good start. Up here in Michigan it’s cold, but no snow so it’s a fun time to be in a turbo car.
I recently acquired a 97 9000 Aero. The exhaust is somewhat problematic and after fixing a leak, I now have 2 more. That being said, its time for new exhaust.
Here’s my question. I have access to both the raw materials and a race fabrication shop here in Michigan. (I am in the auto auction business and we have lots of friends with friends who all like to do go-fast stuff.) They are suggesting that we build a new header pipe for the Aero in 3” stainless to replace the inefficient stock design. What they have proposed would look close to the Abbot pipe (and others). They are also suggesting that we delete the cat (no inspections here yet) and just use a single universal muffler in the back. The entire system would be 3”.
Have any of you ever done anything like this? Are there any adverse effects? The car is stock at this point. Any idea on how this would impact the sound? This could very well be my wife’s daily driver, so I can have this end up like an AutoZone tuned Honda Civic….
Any insight provided would be great. And thanks for the time and trouble.
