David,
On paper, 2.5" diameter exhaust plumbing is capable of flowing over 400 horsepower while the 3" is at over 600. This assumes zero restrictions or bends but you might find that size of the street bound exhaust system is not as important as eliminating restrictions (mufflers, dramatic bends, etc.).
On a majority of street bound turocharged SAAB under 300 horsepower, use of an oversize exhaust system will reduce turbocharger spool and low end torque by 2-4 horsepower before 3K engine rpm. Keeping the diameter realistic will keep the exhaust flow directional and keep better low rpm engine performance/turbocharger response. In exchange for low end horsepower/torque, a larger diameter system will, in some cases, provide a slight increase in engine performance past 5K rpm.
Best of luck and regards,
GaryK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
