Cautionary notice to Forge By-Pass Valve users... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 2 Sep 2007 08:32:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recently had a failure of the barbed hose connector that screws into the top of my Forge FMDVR-A By-Pass Valve. Mine is one of the adjustable styles where the top can spin 360-degrees for best fit.
This barbed fitting is made of Aluminum and has a VERY thin shell. Vibration from 2 years of use caused the fitting to crack and separate at the transition to this very thin section.
Being a Sunday moring in middle America, I could not find a bulhead style barbed hose connector with the required M6-10 thread to replace the failed one. I did find a 3/16 x 1/4 barbed hose connector in Nylon. The Nylon is soft enough that I was able to easily thread it into the M6-10 female thread on the By-Pass Valve cap. I thought I had a set of Metric threading dies to do this the right way - but wrong again!
Anyone using one of these valves may want (read as "should") do two things:
1) Connect your valve to the car's vacuum system via silicone hose. My vinyl hose extension hardened with age and probably contributed to the vibration which caused the fitting failure.
2) Replace the thin bodied aluminum barbed fitting with a brass or stainless part.
I am starting my quest for a M6-10 x 6mm bulkhead style barbed hose connector, (barb for 6mm hose on one end, M6-10 male thread on other) made from a stronger material. Hopefully I can find one after the Holiday weekend.
