You're correct in that if the studs were still in place the head would not clear the timing chain guides. This is of course the reason you set the head over the dowels and then install the studs. Before ARP's studs had an internal hex drive I use to machine an external one which was even more positive. Now they're just a bolt-in but be careful not to get their full shank version as there wouldn't be enough elasticity for an aluminum head. I go a step further on the ARP head studs for Saab 4 cylinders I carry and machine the step away from the lower portion so the stud bottoms out the way it should. In other words one of the big reasons studs are better is because they grab more of the block than just a bolt would. When mine are completed the reduced porting looks the same on the bottom as it came from ARP on the top! Dave at SPG9
