Many coils can generate 40K volts, but it only takes 10-15K to fire a good plug. The extra voltage is good for firing older plugs or I guess you could go to surface gap.
There were a lot of problems with the DI cassettes; I don't know why one would use them in a head that wouldn't take them direct to the plugs unless one just wanted the higher capability or to be different. OTOH, a DIC means no distributor is required...needs crank trigger for timing. Something to be said for that.
