Nothing in a c900 is capable of adapting to anything. The APC is a completely analog system - at x psi it starts cycling the APC solenoid at y hz. If it detects knock before reaching x psi, it starts cycling the solenoid sooner. If the knock goes away, it stops cycling the solenoid until x psi is reached.
You're observing proper operation of an APC solenoid, and by virtue of the fact you're getting 20 psi you've got a tuned box, and seeing proper operation on a bigger scale.
