You also suggest country roads. So consider the strength of the wheel, too. I'd imagine that what works under race track loads might get trashed if you hit a pothole. I don't know so much about performance automotive wheels, but I do know a lot about bicycle wheels where weight makes a huge difference. The physics principles described above explain the phenomenon, too. Large radius from the hub (26" or so instead of 18") and low power (1 hp v. 280 hp) are one thing, but also, when your bicycle hits a bump, the upward momentum is a lot less (lower speed and mass) so that could multiply the effect. I'd think weight affects handling much more than acceleration. Sort of like comparing the aerodynamics of an airplane and sailboat. A lot is the same, but speed makes a big difference. I'd go with the lowest mass (weight) with adequate strength in my automotive wheels (if I didn't just get a car with new wheels). Forged v. cast, for example may help.
