Objectively, the STi is reported to be faster on dry pavement and in a straight line. As I recall the road test, when it's wet the Turbo-X's superior AWD closes the gap.
But your other 9-3 criticisms are clearly off the mark and shouldn't be projected to the Turbo-X. It cannot at all be compared to a 2WD car. It's very precise, and the superior AWD lets it get the hp to the pavement much better than the competition. It's head and shoulders above any FWD (I've had 900s since 1981 and kept the modified 900 T convertible).
That being said, the Turbo-X's hp is lower and it's heavier than the Subie, so it has to have the better drive train to even be close. Although there is a BSR program that's tempting ... .
I haven't driven the Subie, but I checked one out at the auto shoe before I bought the Turbo-X and it really wasn't much competition. If I wanted fast and only fast I'd get an Elise and not even pretend to have a useful car.
