I agree the price is very high.

My problem is that where I live it`s around -10 degree C, and that the oil viscosity is low during cold starts.
When cold and low viscosity oil the paper filters have to much restriction so that the Oil filters internals bypass valve opens, and bypass the oil around the filter.
Since I have a sludge problem I do not like the idea that trapped grains/sludge get a free ticket back home to the engine, I am looking for a real Hi-Flow oil filter that filter cold oil and not open the emergency exit at every cold start.

All conventional paper oil filter have this bypass valve, and I agree it’s necessary, but I feel that the paper filters are to restrictive in general, in my opinion an oil filter should definitely be able to actually filter cold oil as well, an not open the back door and send the trapped gunk back to the engine.

Mann says that the Bypass vale “Ensures that the engine receives a sufficient supply of oil during cold starts when the oil is highly viscous (thick)”

Maybe I am to worried, but I am in the process of getting rid of sludge, every oil change (every 10.000km) I pour 1 liter of kerosene into the oil, and let the engine idle for 15 minutes, then drain, refill oil – a 15 minutes drive, drain & replace oil filter plus oil.
In addition I replace the oil filter every 14 days, open the oil filter and inspect inside for grains. I will continue to do this until I do not find sludge in the filter.

Note: 3 weeks after the last oil change I got a cold start knock, I thought that it was end of life for the engine, but replacing the Oil Filter cured the problem, that’s why I replace the filter every 14 days…

Well, the reply ended up quite longish in the attempt to explain why I am looking for a real Hi Flow filter that actually filters cold oil.

I have switched from the Saab Long life filter to the oversized Purolator filter (PT cruiser model) to get one step further towards better flow.
