Exhaust manifold: to pull or not to pull? 900

In maximizing C900 exhaust flow with cast exhaust manifold, how important is it to remove the weird projection that seems to obstruct flow right before the manifold-to-turbo flange?
I'm tempted to grind it out, but not with the manifold on the car. How difficult is it to pull the exhaust manifold (motor still in the car); how likely is it to come off without breaking studs; and if I do pull it (to remove), what is the preferred material to replace the exhaust manifold gasket? (Copper? And if so, who has it?)
The motor and tranny were rebuilt about 6 years ago, and I assume the exhaust manifold was pulled then (possibly false assumption). It hasn’t been off since then.
Tricks to consider? I've read some posts heard about soaking studs with PB Blaster prior to removal, and replacing mounting hardware with new.
Biggest question is whether gain is worth the hassle.
Thanks.
