Well, one of the SAAB engineers once said that 220 was Posted by nicknick [Email] (#731) [Profile/Gallery] (more from nicknick) on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 22:07:01 In Reply to: HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH, Blackcar [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 25 Jun 2010 17:59:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
a limit for FWD. Not saying never go above 220, just has a 'reasonable' ring to it for me. I broke 2 transmissions (3rd gears, both times) with a stock garrett, 3bar fpr, vac capsule 'bent stop' (with appropriate timing adjustments), and wastegate adjusted to about 8-9psi. Always ran premium, and on a cool day i would see the boost guage hit the stop (don't have a calibrated guage over 10psi). It could easily have been tuned better, but regardless, it stripped the teeth off 3rd twice, and all with careful shifting. Now, i have settled for drivability over max torque, and life is better. I am thinking of installing some kind of 'max power' switch, for 'emergency' situations, but that's another story (probably including a recirulation solenid valve and an MBC). So, like drupchen says, if you want good power, find a way to get it on the road first, then get on with making it. The good thing about these cars is you don't need to spend dollars to make power, and the motors absolutely do not need to be touched (in the realms of what we are talking, anyways) , but you cannot get around the tranny issue without taking it head-on. I can't afford that, yet. Maybe one day i get a cryo-shot-franken-reinforced box with #8's and a Quaife, but until then, i am happy sub-200bhp.
That's my 2c, anyway! Good luck
