Just redline it, you're putting way too much thought into this. It all comes down to how much torque you can put down to the ground; turbo Saabs have great broad torque curves. You will not lose enough engine torque by revving higher to overcome the loss in torque transmitted to the wheels because of the higher gear ratio you would now be pulling in. Example: (not actual numbers, just getting the point across) 2nd gear, 60 mph, 6000 rpm, 230 ft-lbs. 3rd gear, 60 mph, 4000 rpm, 260 ft-lbs. In my viggen, 2nd gear is 1.76:1, and 3rd is 1.18:1. Since they obviously have the same final drive, these proportions will be the same: 1.76*230=404.8 ft-lbs, and 1.18*260=306.8 ft-lbs. Obviously you want to hold onto second as long as you possibly can, or any gear for that matter. Short shifting can yield decent numbers sometimes, but for all out acceleration, just redline it.
