My goal was to build an engine that would last for a long time and have a little more power.
I have always hated the low friction pistons and rings in the Saab that were the cause for PCV6 mods and sludge and burning oil and little tolerance for lean mixtures.....so I wanted to get rid of those pistons.
Next I got the chance to drive a car like mine with a lightened flywheel. Otherwise it was completely stock.....what a difference!! Very very driveable and tractable.
I was horrified by the tiny balance shaft chains and the fast that the balance shafts run at 2x crank speed. That chain lets go and it takes out your cam chain and your engine.
the heavy flywheel and balance shafts have everything to do about perceived smoothness, and little to do with driveability and performance.
Machining the flywheel is a pretty cost effect hop up to me. Aluminum is ok, but if I were to do it over, I might just have the old one machined to drop 12 lbs.
Nick Taliafero does like removing them from 2.0 engines, but not 2.3. So far I am very happy with having them gone.
I could do a 3" down pipe and exhaust, but I have to pass CA smog. They like factory cats here.......it could work, but I wanted to see how Stage 1 worked, and I am happy with stage 1 for now.
