Hook up a fuel pressure gauge and tape the dial to windshield and see what pressure is doing under WOT. If it goes down, you have a marginal fuel pump.
Also, if you or the shop have the ability, you could check the fuel pump amperage ripple with a labscope and milliamp clamp and maybe get a glimpse in if the brushes are worn and commutator have developed a flat spot.
A bad fuel pump with flat spots looks like the left picture where the brushes loose contact with the commutator plates.
