Hi all. Im nervous to even ask this question on such a tuner expert board, and half afraid ill get overwhelmed with complex options and theoretical improvements but here goes ("it's my first time, so be gentle with me" haha)

FYI: I have a 1999 9-3 red di 5 speed. It has the bigger pistons but is the 185hp model not the HOT model.

Recently I replaced the clutch (at 165k mi) with
A bigger style one, and stuts/shocks and had Heavy duty control arm
Bushings and a few other things that convinced me to keep the car for
A lot longer now that I'm into it.

So I figured the 2nd half of its life could be a lot more fun (provided it doesn't break my pocket book) especially if I can do some of the work myself. I have heard from my
Mechanic that I COULD do this:
1. Rear sway bar for about $150
2. Upgrade inter cooler (is this necessary? Suggestions for a "bolt on/no adaption needed" type?)
3. ECU software upgrade (genuine Saab NORDIC?)
4. Cat back upgrade.
5. 4" down pipe

--------//// optional?
6. Steering brace
7. Sport exhaust

So I'm just asking you: what makes sense for my modest expectations which could be summed up like this: good value for dollar, not insane performance but definite bang for said buck : is 250 HP possible for around $1000 ? Is 300 HP nuts? The main thing is, what's reasonable / easy without lots of custom fitting/ adapting?

To put it another way: if I put $1000-$1500 into it what's the best I could get performance wise?
Thanks!! Keep it simple (dumb) for me. The fewer acronyms an the more links the better! Thanks for Your advice.
Robb
