Yeah, Megasquirt Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] (#32) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Justin VanAbrahams) on Wed, 30 Oct 2013 21:58:47 In Reply to: Re: Figures... I like the Megasquirt option as well, because you could easily build an LH -> Megasquirt adapter and literally switch back and forth between the two if you had to. The only thing Megasquirt needs that LH doesn't have is a MAP signal, and that's just a vacuum hose. You could leave the MAF in for LH operation, or gut it so it still looks stock. This plan is, of course, deceiving the Great State of California, and there are ethical, legal, and impound scenarios to consider... But it could work. ;)
The thing that the OBD1 T5 swap gets you that you cannot get with stealthy Megasquirt is direct ignition. You could easily hide the Megasquirt fuel system, but you'd never be able to convince a smog tech that a 1980's Saab had a distributorless ignition, so you'd be stuck running really antiquated spark. That right there is, IMHO, a big reason to pursue a "1995 NG900 engine swap" - LH runs fuel reasonably well, but distributors suck no matter how good they are. An EDIS-esque wasted spark scenario is good for EVERYTHING, but we can't have that. T5 is the only way to dump the dizzy.
My hope for a few years has been that distributors would disappear from the reman scene. California has a quiet policy about NLA parts... which is that if an emissions related component (which, here, is everything from air filter to cat) is NLA, you can get an exemption on a substitute as long as you still pass the sniffer. If you couldn't buy a distributor, you'd be allowed a reasonable facsimile.... like EDIS. :D Hasn't happened yet, but if we hang on just a while longer...... :)
OH - I'll also mention one other thing, and this is a doozy: The BAR can and will approve engine swaps with mods. Potentially you could, for example, do that "NG900 engine swap" and then put in an equal length exhaust manifold "because the NG900 exhaust manifold would not clear the shock towers." I never even thought of this, but a friend of mine with an engine swapped car got his fantastic, decidedly non-California-legal header through the BAR because the engine's stock exhaust manifold wouldn't fit. I should have known, as years ago I got my 16v-swapped 5-door through the BAR with a K&N filter because the 5-door didn't have a provision for the 16v airbox (and I was lazy). As long as the part is functionally similar and doesn't mess up the functionality of the emissions system, and the car passes the sniffer, the BAR can exempt all sorts of bolt-on gear that you'd otherwise never get through. I think a B202 with T5, an FMIC, and a header could be smogged as a NG900 swap.
Dealing with the BAR is always a bit of a gamble, but they really are pretty reasonable to deal with IME. Maybe next year I'll try this with my 5-door, as it's already been BAR'd once. ;)
