I had a co-worker try to tell me today that his friend's Civic was impressive because it could do a whopping 112mph with an amazing three people in it! No kidding. Knowing what was coming, I asked him where this performance came from. He told me that it had intake/headers/exhaust, and a spoiler. I work at a golf course, and we were both next to a tee, and I picked up a bench and said "Do you think my Saab or any other car would go faster if I plopped a fiberglass version of THIS on the trunk?" to which his answer was no. "Well there ya go then, a spoiler is not a performance mod, it's a rice mod." And the argument began... some interesting points made were that this kid's exhaust adds 30hp. (that's if you put the accompanying sticker on too). I explained that factory tuners know the best about the pulse characteristics of the engine's exhaust flow because they're the ones that designed it, and that, for example, the dealer accessory/option Sport Exhaust on my SPG (okay, it has a gutted cat, my bad) adds a total of seven horsepower according to Saab literature! It's all for the sound, I told him. I then blew to bits his theory of the intake adding more than 2hp because dryer vent is actually more restrictive than stock, etc. and allowed 10hp for the header. There's 19hp.
I then told him that my Saab would easily be able to achieve 130 with a washing machine and three people in it by virtue of the fact that it has two things a Honda doesn't: cargo space, and power.
Guess who bought a Saab this afternoon - my co-worker. He's now the proud owner of a '87 900T. He even told me that it obviously has way more balls than this Honda, and handles much better to boot.
The problem with the ricer fad is that they know NOTHING about how engines/cars work (the 95% of them) and actually think that dryer vent will make them go faster. Pretty scary, huh?
