Somewhere... he's told me that water injection will allow you to run a leaner mixture, thus be able to obtain more power, as you mention. From my point of view, it's not about band-aid fixes, it's about my budget (both money and time). Sure, $450 sounds like a lot of money. However, keep in mind that it only takes a few hours to install (ok, a good weekend) and with the basic system, there is no tweaking. Compare to $1200-$1400 for an aftermarket fuel system, plus many many hours of tweakage, preferably spent on an expensive dyno, and you have easily tripled or quadrupled what I spent.

Yes, my A/F ratio is far from ideal, but it's not going to hurt the car unless I make it a point to drive over 5500 rpm all the time. That doesn't make sense anyhow, as the HP drops off over 5100, so may as well shift. Cruise and idle A/F is still just fine as evidenced both by low emissions and MPG still in the low-mid 30s.

As for the Jacobs, I haven't checked timing yet with it disconnected, I may do that later. My main curiosity was to see if it actually gave the 6-8% HP and torque that Jacobs claimed, which it clearly does not. If anything, the test should have been biased towards the Jacobs system, as I didn't put proper NGK plugs in for the stock run, nor recheck the timing or regap (though gap is only 0.030" so very close to stock). Fortunately, my primary impetus for the Jacobs system was not for HP and torque, but solely for fuel economy, and I have not been disappointed in that regard.

I still am bothered by the band-aid term. A band-aid is what you put on an injury after it occurs. Water injection prevents detonation, does not cure it after it's already started. Perhaps we should call it a vaccine.

I'm in no way saying an aftermarket ECU is a bad way to go, just that it isn't nearly as cost effective if all you want to do is prevent detonation, which is my goal. I really couldn't care less what the A/F ratio curve looks like so long as I know my engine isn't going to blow up and I still get decent MPG. :)
