There are a huge number of variables in 911 Turbos, but one thing is certain: it will cost an arm and a leg to maintain and insure. You don't mention where you live, but if you get a winter, having a 911 T as your daily driver will not be fun. The turbo came here in 1975, with a 3.0 flat six. In 1978 the engine grew to 3.3 liters, the body was galvanized, and various other improvements were made. After 1980, Porsche stopped importing the turbo, so any cars from 1981 to 1985 are gray-market, either from Canada or Europe. Be very wary of gray-market cars. In 1986, the car returned, and continued until 1989, the first year the turbo got a 5 speed gearbox. With any Porsche, make sure the car is well checked out by a knowledgeable specialist mechanic - I know of a few in MA, if you happen to be here. If you contact the PCA, they should be able to refer you to somebody good. How well the car is maintained is critical - you don't mention the mileage or condition of the car, or it's ownership history. Multiple owners can mean multiple abuse. If somebody only kept the car a short time, they may have neglected maintenance. Unless you are buying from a fool, a 911 turbo for under $20,000 will be a piece of crap. You can just as easily pay $30,000 and get a piece of crap. Have you driven the car? This car defines turbo-lag. If you are really interested in the car, I can fax you a copy of Bruce Anderson's analysis of the used 911T from Excellence Magazine. Anderson is a good authority on 911's, he's been working on them for 30 + years. I don't take everything he says as the Gospel, but he's more knowledgeable than most. I have often thought about a 911 turbo instead of my 911S. I repeatedly go back and forth between upgrading my S and buying a turbo. If you have any other questions, just ask! IMHO, as a daily driver, I would go with a 944 Turbo over a 911, if I had to have a turbo, though I think the best daily driver Porsche is the 968. Water-cooled, front engined and no turbo (in the US), but still a great car all round, and one I occasionally wish I owned instead of my 9000 T.
