Hope everything is truly OK now. Have gone/am going through the same thing right now. Engine builder scr*wed up on boring /honeing the cylinder walls, keeps telling it's acceptable when it's not, after lots of talk agrees to do a second one which I supplied and paid for BTW and installs the psitons with rings gone soft from overheating, telling me that the rings are not good for the application and that the engine wouldn't last 3,000 miles. Left not in a friendly fashion and hoped this time at least th work would be OK. So I bought another set of pistons (according to the supplier the rings were NLS) and had them installed by a Saab dealer nearby - whose tech _did_ care even though he had to clean up someone else's fault. Car went fantastic, and sustained 20+ APC-controlled psi without breaking, so I think I'm golden. Had to replace the gearbox 700 miles after that - no, I didn't break it, but tech discovered a really shoddy rebuild which caused, er, 'interesting' wear patterns when addressing a gearbox leak. In comes new '91-'93 type rebuilt 'box. New fuel pump, alternator, reground cams (thaks again Vince!) within the next 700 miles. Realized I'm so broke that I couldn't afford to break anything now.
Of course, that's exactly what's happened a few weeks ago - blue smoke an accel, oil gushing out through the filler tube.

Oh well, there goes another year while I'm saving up and source all bits 'n pieces. This time I want to be 100% sure on everything before I commit to the rebuild on anything that comes out.

Why is it that _everyone_ I know who's had his engine custom built experiences problems like this (Vince is on his second rebuild just after the first one went in, Damien still waiting for his IIRC, your extremely unfortunate story,...) Is it so hard to build a Saab engine _really_ well, and stick to certain deadlines? Is this really a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', i.e. if you are unfortunate enough to lose a short engine on a Saab, just stick in another stock rebuilt without all the custom work (balancing, strenghtening, etc) that is supposed to make it last longer)?
