hmmm.
I'm not sure if I was that clear about inactive coils. I meant the few coils on the end that have spacing smaller than the center coil spacing. Or say if you started at the beginning of the spring and rapped around until you found the spacing that is in the middle, then everything below that would be inactive. I believe this method will more accurately determing working spring rate which is more appropiate for comparing springs. The problem I see w/ counting them active is that they have less distance to travel than the other coils and at one point they will bind before the other coils and the springrate will change. This idea is pertinent w/ OEM SAAB springs b/c the front springs have free heights of @ 15inches and the max distance between the spring tower and seat is @ 10.5 inches w/ the shock mounted, so the spring has to be compressed 4.5 inches to be mounted. Then when the car is set down w/ the wheel on, you will see the spring compressed another 2 or so inches. The chances of those odd coils on the end binding is high!
I guess I'm not looking to estimate ride height but to compare loaded height to gain a percentage diff. I think loaded height would be based on # of inactive coils, coil thickness, springrate, and load. So the my equation would be Inactive coils X Coil thickness - Springrate X Load. Comparing two springs w/ this equation should give a %diff to compare ride height, right?
