Peter, an all-around good discussion of the subject.
While I agree that our favorite Swedish designers and engineers did not
"just pluck numbers out of a hat", I disagree that we should hold their decisions
as sacred. The reason is this - they were working toward a product specification
that did not contain the stuff that we (here on the performance bb) are looking
for: acceleration, cornering g's and low lap times, among others. I imagine the
specification for the c900 was something like this:
Attention Engineering:
Saab needs a new car, which we are calling the “900”. Marketing has already
printed up brochures, so you don't have much time. Feel free to rip off as much
of the 99 as you can, since new parts are expensive and take forever to get. The
new "900" should have a comfortable ride and room for the family plus all the crap
that families have to carry. Bonuses will be paid for incorporation of quirky design
features and/or unique styling to set it apart from the competition. If you have time,
try to work in some kind of "sport" variant, but don't spend a lot of time on it - there
are no bonuses for speed.
Still, in my opinion the c900 chassis is underutilized with the stock suspension tuning,
and there is plenty to gain in performance while not reaching dangerous NVH levels
or cracking anything. Heck, the A-arms crack on their own, so how would you know
if you actually caused anything?
