I had an X1/9 1.5L. Its engine was under-whelming, but it loved to
be reved to its redline (which I think was close to 7 or 8 grand).
The chassis was amazing. Without sway-bars stock, the car was like
a go-cart. The late 80's model I had was good quality as well. Very
few problems except some minor electrical and calipers going bad because
the previous owner never changed the brake fluid.
I've also had experience with Alfa Milano's and 164's. The Milano/75
is just f'in glued to the road. It was far ahead of BMW... The 164
was a FWD that was developed together with the 9000. The 164 with the
3.0L V6 flies.. feels more sportscar than sedan.
I know the car you are talking about. Fiat 850 Spider, the one that
came out before the 124 Spider, and then the 2000 Spider. The most
recent one is the Barchetta which we never received.
It would be a breathe of fresh air if we could get some modern models
over here (aside from the $$$ Maserati, Ferrari, and Lambos we get so
far). Apparently the quality problems of before have been widely fixed
(like in most modern cars) but the handling, style, etc.. is still
special.
Anyway.. we are a country still of automatic Taurus, Camry, and SUVs
for awhile. More power to cars like the new 9-3 Aero and MINI Cooper S!
