97 VW Passat Turbo Diesel

This is my wifes ride. I have put in Biletien HD mono tube struts, new brakes, 16" alloys and 205/16-50 Potenza S-03s (same at the 95SET!)

I did the wheels and tires because there just is not enough wet and dry traction for safety sake. The eagle GA's just last too long with higher wear ratings and get too age and heat harded. They get plain dangerous and you have to toss them out before there used up. So what the point in that {end of rant}. So I went for the best traction I could find.

So I have been reading about the power mods at http://www.tdiclub.com and finally decided to do it. My wife has been "why bother" on this issue for a long time. So I ordered the chips, this vehicle is socketed, and the cost was $267US. Cheapest ones out there. I get two tiny chips in a standard envelope, first class postage, pennies, chips going through all of the rollers in the postal sorting machines. Not very fancy that, but they did say free shipping! :)

So I yanked the ECU, put in the new chips, put the ECU back. Started it up, the engine did not explode, this is a good start. Go for a drive, there is lots of power! Gobbs of soot and smoke too. Did not bargain for that. Drove around for a while, max power produced smoke. The next day I drive it, so if there are problems they are mine not the wifes. Lots of power and NO smoke. The supplier states on the BB that the ECU needs to adapt to the new firmware for fuel mapping and higher boost pressure. He says wait for a few days for the power. Well he was right on. Never see any smoke now and the engine pulls SO strong, I never expected that. On the expressway, when you hit the go petal in 5th gear, it will push you back into your seat. So all of this was quite a surprise. More that I expected.

Remember my wife's "why bother" attitude about the power mods? Well, she has this big grin on her face and is very very happy! She also likes to a hold of my 95SET for some G-force therapy. (No jokes about G-spots, I did say G-force!)

There is something about diesel power. Low end torque right a way, and you are not flogging high RPM's. Max torque at 2000 for real, all the time, not just on a dyno in Sweden and a sales piece. When my 95SET with its mods gets down and dirty, it is fast. But there is a lot of noise and torque pulse vibration. The diesel is so much smoother. It will be interesting when the european performance diesels come back. This will happen when the diesel fuels are improved. The Saab TID diesel is a good match for the Viggen. And you can get performance firmware for that too.

Many folks don't realize that a diesel introduces fuel over a period of time. So the torque from a cylinder cycle is very smooth. With a gasser the fuel is there and it wants to burn all at once. So at low rpms that can feel like hammer blows. With our Passat, I can get at the bottom of a steep hill and it will craw up the hill very slowly with no foot on the petal. Very smooth when doing that. Try that with a gas engine. Can't do it. There two types of engines are very different in many ways. I find that I enjoy working on both of these vehicle and appreciate the differences.

I have modified the ECU and will be meeting another TDI enthusiast who has software on his laptop that is like Saab's TechII. You can get the SW and ODB-II data cable for $200. We will be modifing some engine parameters. You can get in there and modify fueling factors and injection timing and exhaust gas reciculation parameters and read and clear codes and things like that. So there is lots of things to in the engine operation that can be read and modified. But you can change the basic mappings and turbo control via that interface. I keep telling my self that I don't need one ;)
