Part of the problem is that the low cetane means that the injection timing needs to be retarded to avoid noise and mechanical stress. The sulfer in the fuels in the US and Canada increase soot. So the engines have been set up to run lean to accomodate worse case fuels.

If someone with diesel gets some Amoco Permier fuel, they never want to use anything else. The engine has more power, no smoke (cleaner running) and it runs quieter and smooter too. But that fuel is only available in certain regions.

Many, those who have increase performance, and those who have not, use Diesel fuel conditioners which increase lubricity (nice for the injector pump), biocide, anti foam, increased cetane, water dispertion and gel point supression... and maybe some things that I can't remember. The increased cetane makes the engine cleaner burning, mor powerful, quieter and smoother. So for those who know and care, the problems with poor fuel can be dealt with to some extend.

What Chip? http://www.speedtuning.com. Note that there are other chips, and a few different tuning boxes which go into the engine control wiring harnesses. Later production does not have sockets in the ecu's so the ecu gets modified or you get a tuning box. There is a choice. There are VW TDI gettogethere's were they do mods en-masse. And there are many places across the country where you can go to get the work done while you wait. And most of those will make some changes to other ECU parameters with a VAG-COM interface.

Before getting a chip, visit http://www.tdiclub.com and do some research.
