Should you review this old link, I pose yet a few more DI questions (mine failed at 45k, so this experience piqued my interest about the DI)
- You mentioned in a post that the new 9-3 will use an inductive ignition system. Can you say whether this was driven by cost, reliability or perhaps both ? Use of a CD ignition system somewhat puzzles me given the complexity of the system and the environment it lives in. Will the CD DI system continued to be used in LPT 9-5 of the future ? I assume the CD design achieves a better spark at high boost and high RPM levels than the simpler induction systems.
- Getting combustion (ionization) feedback through the plug just amazes me. I am assuming that the actual resistance across the spark plug gap is somehow measured and communicated as a variable to the engine management systems. And this value with the other engine sensor values provides the info for an ideal combustion event. Does the use of non petroleum based fuel products impact this system in any way ?
Also, question of whether black DI is better than red DI - if black DI spark last three times longer than red is this not better for smoother idle speeds, or do the DI's produce multiple sparks per combustion cycle at lower RPM ?
Thanks,
David
