I'm with you on this one, ckpaden. I applaud the obvious quality that has gone into the Abbott and KIC braces. The costs of those kits don't bother me either - for the low volumes they produce, they are probably not getting rich on these no matter how much they charge. I just think this is a fun DIY project.
Me? I'm a mech engineer and I look at this as a interesting problem, with my hypothesis being that the Abbott and KIC braces are very nice but probably over-engineered. So a question to anybody that might know:
Where is the flex in the firewall? About what percent of the flex problem is caused by motion in the (A) forward-back direction, (B) left-right, (C) up-down, or (D) rack clamp rotation about the vertical axis?
The Abbott and KIC braces address (B) and (D). I'm skeptical that even with the welded brace that these do much about (A) and (C) given the angles involved.
I'm sketching up a solution that, while requiring machining, would probably come in at a cost of about $100, look professional, and give me that warm DIY feeling.
