Though it's true, they don't open the hood or look under the car, so you easily could have removed/tampered with whatever you like. All they care about is what comes out the tailpipe. The first time my '87 9000T failed, it was very close, and replacing the O2 sensor and usual tune-up items, plus a bottle of the 'Guaranteed to Pass' stuff did the trick. Two years later, no dice... I had to replace the AMM as well as the O2 sensor again. However that time, it passed with readings so low I almost couldn't believe it. I would have had to multiply most of my readings by a factor of 10-20 or more, to get anywhere near the limit.
