Hello, I also had a similar experience when I started autocrossing again (I autocrossed alot in high school and on and off for the last ten years) by getting my ass kicked by "slower" cars. After getting much more seat time in the car (and getting used to running a front wheel drive car), you will get alot better - however, some cars will be faster with a driver of equal ability. I could not outrun a friend of mine in a Celica GT (on street tires like me) with similar driving ability since his car is better for autocrossing (lighter, better transient response, etc). I still find that the Viggen is not so good for very slow speed parking lot autocrosses. I (and the car) do much better at the higher speed events (hitting the limiter in second) where I can outrun my friend consistenly. My advice would be to not worry about getting dedicated tires until your times (for all runs) are pretty close to each other (a second or two without any penalties added).

As for the VRK, I have mixed feelings. I absolutely love the VRK and modified suspension (new shocks, springs, and rear swaybar) for twisty mountain roads at speed, but feel that the penalties of moving into SM (Street Mod) are not worth it for autocrossing. For a dedicated autocross car, I would remove the front swaybar, switch to konis, and run Kuhmo autocross tires to the make the car the fastest. For a street car (which mine mostly is - my only vehicle), I really like the modifications and just live with a really bad pax time when I autocross (since I do this fun and do not expect to ever be national champion).

I recently upgraded to the Falken Azenis tires once my P6000's wore out and really like them. They are not as sticky as an autocross race tire, but are way better than anything else that is a "street" tire. Plus, they are only $113 a tire on http://www.discounttiredirect.com. Better have a dedicated set of winter tires since they will really suck in snow.

Hope this helped.
