The original post was about a T5 with a modified ECU. Others have broadened the issue.

For a modified ECU where the ECU provides the on boost torque and HP, the response in the 1st too gears can be less than exciting.

When folks do a MBC or MBC+anticipator on at T5, they can increase power, 2nd gear is great, but its hard to be fast in 1st gear as the torque comes on very fast and you have wheel spin. So granny starts in 1st gear are not a great end point.

Now back to modified ECUs. You have the power. You can get the power to come on faster. A SMBC will reduce boost delay and you can give the first two gears a kick as well. You will then be faster and the boost response and 1st two gears will seem more in harmony with the ECU in the higher gears. The ECU and BPC are still in the loop and controlling the boost. The amount of boost reduction that the ECU has is controlled by how you set the SMBC of course. You are simply not allowing the BPC to start opening the WG as fast as a stock setup. So result depends on how you do adjust the SMBC. Want to know what boost reduction is possible. You could unplug the BPC and see what the peak boost is then. I have not tried this on a T7, but we know that with a T5, that will drop the boost a lot!

So for a T5, a SMBC will allow for better control over traction in 1st gear. There are reports that an overboosted-SMBC on a T5 will also increase power, but that probably makes 1st gear a problem too.

For a T5 or T7 modified ECU, the SMBC can be adjusted to not increase power, but inprove throttle response and add a bit more kick to the lower gears. You can avoid problems with overpowering 1st gear. With a T7, traction control will help control overpowering the tires.
