Hey guys,

Just bought the recent issue of Road and Track, the cover car is the Lotus Elise. I always knew Lotus was a fast car, agile, etc, but I never thought it was this awesome. FWIW, I am quoting a very large portion of Road & Track, and I am listing it word for word. Just the facts of what I have here in front of me.

The old Lotus had 120 HP and did a 5.7 second 0-60. The new Elise, street legal here in the US, has a 1.8-liter Celica GTS engine redone to produce 190 HP with the Toyota VVTL-i engine that is paired with a 6 speed manual tranny. The newly equipped Toyota engine Elise does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, and does the quarter mile in 12.0 seconds flat.

The Elise is smaller than the Miata but can fit a male up to 6'3" 'comfortably'. It has an aluminum chasis and weighs 1975lbs. Rear wheel drive, mid engine.

Yokohama teamed up with Lotus to make special tires especially for the Elise. The Elise has garnered more than 30 awards from virtually every enthusiast publication and organization in Europe.

In R&T's previous test of the world's best handlings car, the previous 160HP model ranked second to only the Ferrari 360 Modena. Lotus promises it will outshine it's predicessor. Road & Track claims "the result is what may well be the best handling car in the world."

They plan to release it this coming January in Los Angeles with cars being available in the US by next spring.

Here are some specs of the 2003 Ferrari 360 Modena versus this claimed Elise.

Ferrari:
0-60 in 4.5 seconds
1/4 mile in 12.6 seconds
price between $150,000 and $170,000

Lotus Elise:
0-60 in 4.3 seconds
1/4 mile in 12.0 seconds
price.......
$39,000

Faster, handles better, costs less than a Ferrari 360 Modena. Looks like Ferrari and the new Ford GT have another very serious contender to worry about, if not, try to catch up with. It also can hold it's own against an Enzo (on paper anyway)

Happy dreaming ( :
