Synth oil will leak only if you have bad seals to begin with. Synth oils will keep your engine cleaner than dino oil and will clean out gunk from the dino that may be stopping leaks because your seals are already in poor shape. Good synth oils will expand the seals and keep them in good shape.

Synth oil is superior to dino and can go for longer change intervals.

With a turbo car synth oils will resist coking in the turbo and will take the heat of a turbo car better than dino.

It has nothing to do with different tolerances of the older cars. I use Mobil 1 Synth in my '88C900TCoupe with no problems and many other do as well.

Synth oil offers better protection on cold start ups and high temp condition, better fuel economy, longer change interval which justifies the higher cost and is better for the enviroment.

Synth oil is the way to go if your seals are in good shape and your not burning a lot of oil.
