According to a plot posted here some time ago, the dist. ending in -010 has a more linear timing curve because of a stiffer retard spring in the vac capsule; this is the only difference vs. the -008 dist., BTW. The capsule is apparently not available separately; at least, there is no p/n in the EPC, WorldPac resellers don’t list it, and a Bosch dealer I called was unable to locate it.

According to internet posts, for what they’re worth, this dist. was part of the later red box kits, was installed in the 90/91 SPG, and maybe the last few years of c900t?? Also installed on Euro LPT cars.

Crushing the bottom of a standard capsule seems feasible. Cutting one open and replacing the spring would be challenging because the material lost to the cutting wheel would mean that, unless you put it all back together in such a way to compensate for the cut, the spring would be compressed, and you wouldn't get retard until a bit more pressure hit the diaphragm (maybe not a bad thing after all). You cannot open the capsule by grinding the lip off the top flat surface because the heat destroys the diaphragm and, anyway, doesn’t give you access to the retard spring.

A search of old Perf. Board posts should turn up the plot of the -010 curve.
