Use a small cutting wheel on a die grinder to remove the top, cut along the rim of the fold..pretty easy. there's a plastic body to the pot that the centrally binded diagphragms(2) work on which holds all into position.
Crushing the bottom would not be the preferrable route...crushing the top would be more logical, but the difference in increase in springrate would be minimal.
It's not as difficult as you think. Hardest part is finding the correct springrate to use and correctly limiting the arm distance, once that's known you can adhere the lid to the body and not worry about some fancy billet bracket!
