I can't think of any reason why a head gasket change would be a good time to switch to syn over any other time. If you're going to do the head gasket soon anyway, I'd wait & run the A-Rx after the work is done. That way it can clean anything the work left behind.

The only way you can get A-Rx is on-line. Follow the link below. There's a special for 1st time buyers & a different special if you sign up on their Q&A forum. If you're planning on using new oil to run the cleaning cycle (I didn't), then I'd suggest Shell's Rotella T syn 5W-40. It provides all the A-Rx "compatibility" of a non-PAO-based oil but still has the protection & durability for your turbo. If you really, really want to use a dino oil, then a good 15W-40 (like Delvac 1300 or Delo 400) would be my picks.

What are winter temps like in VA? I've been using M1 15W-50 in my '90 for the past 18 mos (thru 2 N.CO winters & startups below 12°F) but I'm still not comfortable using it in the 9³ for temps below 20°F (it's my wife's car & I can't monitor its response to this oil during the winter).

No, I wouldn't expect you to change your oil at 20k mile intervals. '95 9000 Aero, right? With only 4 qts of oil in a Saab turbo, I wouldn't recommend anything longer than 10k-12k miles with one of the premium syns. And at that point, there's no need to change the filter any sooner than with every oil change. Both of my C900s are non-turbo, so my plan is to run the oil to 10k miles & take a sample for UOA. When I get the report back, I'll decide if it's good enough to simply change the filter & keep going, or if it should be dumped. If it looks good at 10k, I'll dump it at 20k miles but take another sample just to see how well it fared.
