I was going to do a NPR in my 88 9000, but I was steered away from a local chap that builds intercooler and races. He wasn't sure about the NPR (as a couple of his friends have them) but mentioned that the internal structure of *some* truck intercoolers is not condusive to good cooling. Why I'm not sure, but possibly due to the fac that they are low boost. But that is soewhat confusing as they are 'on boost' longer tahn cars. Maybe that is why they require large surface area. This sentiment is shared by and AUS intercooler maker.
Anyway the NPR is 2 inch thick. Might be a good one to try if you can score one for cheaper.
I ended up with a 2WX6.5HX3.25thick Garrett bar and plate core. Mounted it below the bumper with near-full airflow to the core (the chin spoiler just barely fit but requires some trimming;-) a vast improvement over my olg OG 81CFM FMIC, especially in heat. Certainly the surface area matters but I went with the best I could find locally in terms of internal efficiency and cooling. I thought about surface area, but then I looked at my old FMIC installed and onmy 1 inc at the bottom and 4 inches above the bumper were actually getting clean air. Now I have 6 inches clean air below the bumper with over 3 inches thick of core. Seems to work, others may disagree;-) Besides there are more than enough Honda owners that would trip over themselves to get my FMIC if I decied on a different option (larger).
Here is a link from that AUS company,,,,,they obviously seem bias but some food for thought regardless.
