Given that your question appears on the Performance Board, I'm assuming you're into making your c900 go faster than stock, and probably prefer to make these changes on your own, not by paying someone to do it for you. Thus, in that context, and in my opinion, DI/APC is impractical for two reasons:
1. The only way you can increase boost with it is to shell out several hundred dollars for an aftermarket chip.
2. If you opt to go the DI-only route, which was available one year only, in Europe only and roughly 15 years ago, it's impractical because you'll likely have a tough time obtaining the parts you need for the conversion.
In my opinion, it's not possible to gauge the effectiveness of DI/APC installed in a c900 simply by driving the car--it's had numerous modifications! How can you tell that it's the timing curve and retard in response to knock that makes the car go as it does?
So why do people do it? Why not? It's a shadetree project and shadetree projects are fun. It's a more modern approach to engine management than stock, albeit with more limited control. Is it worth it? Only before/after dyno runs could tell you. In the meantime, consider Saab's specs for 1990 900 SPGs and 9000 DI/APC-equipped Turbos (both cars used the B202):
SPG:
175 HP at 5500, 195 ft-lb TQ at 3000 RPM
9000T with DI/APC:
165 HP at 5500 RPM, 195 ft-lb TQ at 3000 RPM
One last thing to ponder--for about 20 dollars for junkyard parts and a couple hours of tinkering, you could easily get the above numbers--and beyond--at the wheels.
0.02, YMMV
