The tab is there to protect an EGT sensor from an exposure to rapid wear and tear, and maybe to reduce calcuation error. If you look at the photo of the glowing red hot 900 exhaust header (can be found in photo of the month archives), you will see the tab is designed to protect the sensor from direct exposure to all of the exhaust gases, probably so the friction from the gases does not add into the equation of the temperature. Look on the outside of the manifold, there is a flat circle located perfectly for a the sensor to be located just behind the tab. Plus, look at any other turbocharged car on the market, they don't have any tabs like this. It simply blocks exhaust flow to the turbo, not a good thing either way. I also removed the tab on my 90 SPG and it may have helped a little in theory, but every little bit helps.
take care,
Taylor
