As far as knock--the car used to maintain boost up at the yellow/red threshold prior to the mod. Now it falls all the way back to near base with agressive throttling. I use 93 octane, and 12-13 psi or so should be no problem in almost any engine...in my 1990 9000S i ran 8-9 PSI on a 10.1:1 compression engine for 20,000 miles. The relative compression must haven been nearly as high if not higher.
I have not performed the timing mod, as I was just recently informed of it. I'm supposing I will do that right away. I have done nothing for fuel. Most individuals informed me (although they may be ill-informed) that the stock fuel system will support the boost levels I am at, although this thread has cast some doubt (jak would know with this expertise about the bosch system i have recently read about). My friend has a 3.0 bar FPR that I am going to try out, that would make the system have the same theoretical flow as my 1990's. I am hesitant to purchase an A/F meter, as they only seem accurate with the expensive wideband O2 sensors.
I'm not particularly worried about my motor blowing up. I've tuned alot of engines before, this just happens to be my cheap daily driver I'd like a little more power out of. I can pretty much only afford my 944 Turbo for big power. I will most likely end up doing the vacuum retard mod along wiht some minor fuel system mods, as jak points out it seems I may be risking lean-out. 188,000 miles and running strong, can't ask too much more out of this old workhorse.
