I suspect at 300hp on this car (mine is a '96 SET), one would have to do a lot to keep the front wheels on the ground and the engine in one piece. The cost of upgrading the turbo would be small by comparison. No fun to have all that power and only be able to go straight.
Goal? I suppose 25-30% more hp between 3000-5000 rpm would give one significantly more passing ability... Better throttle response as someone else wrote today (the one thing I was not impressed w. when I recently drove a 9-3SE HOT), less body roll and to be able to stay on the throttle in a good curve (rear sway bar, I know)... not resorting to 3" exhausts with cored out cat converters and missing mufflers...
I think that installing a new IC, a chip upgrade, a modest exhaust upgrade, some suspension mods and possibly having the turbo modified would be worth getting that out of the car. $1,500-2k in parts, some DIY labor, and maybe taking the car in to have the exhaust put on and new suspension installed. I am too old and lazy to go under my car w/o a lift... errr... I mean too good looking, yeah, that's the reason... (LOL).
