Distortion shouldn't be a concern, because there are immovable pieces at both ends, and the arms are 1/8", which is plenty thick. I didn't Magnaflux beforehand. I didn't even think of that. We took these arms off an 88 with very few miles, so I just assumed that they're clean. As far as changing the physical properties of the metal, heating it would anneal it, which would actually make it more ductile than it came from the factory (depending on the alloy). But this effect would be very localized around the weld, and won't change the tensile strength of the metal enough to create problems.
All in all, I don't think there should be any problems created by welding extra plates on. If you were super worried, you could use a TIG welder with a pulser on to minimize the heating of the metal. Then get the whole assembly heat treated and shot peened to relieve all the stresses and make it very strong. All of this would be very unnecessary and costly, though. The main arguement against would be the added weight, but for a penalty of only about a pound, this is negligible. Good luck!
