Tools: Lots. I would not have been able to do it without a shop press, though most of that was related to the differential. You need a variety of pullers. You need a dial gauge with a base. Basic tools such as ratchet, full set of sockets including at least one internal torx, T50 maybe? External Torx E14 bit if you're replacing the crown gear on the differential.
How difficult is it? Well, I haven't actually succeeded yet, but mostly it's just time consuming. You have to be careful not to lose any parts, and keep track of where they went. Taking pictures and notes as you go is a good idea.
Resources: Someone e-mailed me a manual for the trans. I have also used the pictorial procedure on thesaabsite. In fact that is the most useful, but it only goes as far as the second gear synchro. The rest I kind of figured out as I went. Jak has been helpful and encouraging on the phone.
As long as you resign yourself to the fact that it'll probably take longer than you expect, you will do all right. I've had delays waiting for parts that have totalled several weeks.
