soliciting tips on removing clutch master piston

My 69 V4's clutch master packed it in over the winter. I'm trying to remove the master piston to determine if just a piston seal kit will restore the ability to apply hydraulic pressure on the slave. I have the master and slave out of the car. The master piston was stuck, but is now returning freely by return spring pressure right up to the point at which it would begin to exit the bore. I've tried pushing it out with air pressure, using a bicycle pump and a Schrader valve on the reservoir cap, and a bleeder screwed tightly into the hose port. 60 psi is not able to push the master piston out of the bore. The piston movement has the characteristics of coming up to a hard stop, not binding, but behaving as if it is arriving at some physical barrier.
I've seen from a search that a zerk fitting and grease has worked for others, but I expect that if 60 psi of air won't do it then 60 psi of grease wouldn't either.
Is there anything that I've not seem to disassemble might be preventing the master piston from being removed? The pushrod retainer clip (removed with the rod) is all I can plainly see, but is there another, less obvious, item keeping the piston from coming out?
