Stretching the redline

Based on previous experience I never figured there was any point in revving a V4 too high -- power would tail off before the engine ran out of revs.
But now that my 1974 Sonett III has acquired a 2-barrel carb, an MSS exhaust and a Pertronix Ignitor, I feel I'm being short-changed a bit by the 5500-rpm redline. The engine is still pulling hard at that point and feels as if it has enough breath to go at least a few hundred RPM higher.
Anyone have experience with SIMPLE mods to take the rev limit higher safely? By "simple" I mean I don't want to have to take the heads off or invest big money in, e.g., comprehensively lightening the valvetrain assembly via lighter valves, pushrods, lifters etc.
So, the approach that suggests itself is to fit stiffer valve springs... but I don't know how hard that is to do or whether it provides any worthwhile benefits.
Anyone have any experience that might be a guide?
