The freewheel is on the input shaft of the transmission. It wouldn't give any advantage when flat-towing as the differential is still turning if the front wheels are rotating. You'd put the transmission in neutral to tow anyway, so the freewheel wouldn't effect anything.
Freewheel can be disengaged while accelerating but it is best to stop to engage it. It allows DOWNshifting without the clutch as the engine returns to idle. Upshifting without the clutch still requires matching engine RPM to the transmission to prevent grinding.
