Proper level for transmission oil? Posted by Reed R [Email] (#1557) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Reed R) on Wed, 18 Jun 2014 00:35:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I got a 74 Sonett III a couple of months ago, and am working through the standard maintenance schedule items, since I don't know the last time they were performed.
I gotten to changing the transmission oil, and the amount of oil I was able to get in (about .5 liters) seems far less than the 1.7 liters that the service manual says the transmission should hold. I don't have a lot of car maintenance experience, so hoping that someone can point out where I've gone wrong.
I removed the filler and drain plug, and it didn't seem like a lot of fluid came out, but I didn't really measure it. The draining seemed complete (still had the occasional drip of oil coming out), so I replaced the drain plug. I then removed the level plug. The manual isn't super explicit about it, but my impression was that I should just add oil to the filler hole until it starts coming out of the level hole. However, I only got about .5 liters in before oil started coming out of the filler. I was expecting to need a bit more than 1.5 liters.
I've seen instructions for building a dipstick to measure the trans oil level, but it seemed easier to just go off of the level plug. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?
Not sure that it matters, but I was using a MasterPro GL-5 80W-90 gear oil. After reading some other posts here, I've ordered "Red Line (50204) SAE 75W80 API GL-4 Manual Transmission and Transaxle Lubricant" from Amazon and will be draining the 80W-90 once it arrives. Given the higher cost of the RedLine MTL, I'm hoping that someone has some insight on what I'm doing wrong before then.
Thanks for your help,
Reed
