Thanks Kansas - I was just looking for reassurance that there wasn't some special SAAB tool that hasn't been made for 25 years that I needed.
I went to drain the .5L of GL-5 oil that I had added previously, and when I opened the drain plug even less that .5L came out and it just started slowly dripping. I took a smaller diameter bolt and carefully pushed it up the drain hole. It didn't feel like there was any obstruction, but once it broke the surface tension of the oil, it started coming out rapidly.
It looked pretty clean coming out. I drained it into the same container that the engine oil was already in, but took a magnet to fish for metal bits. Nothing of any notable size was present, just a few metal burrs.
I finally got the Redline SAE 75W80 GL-4 oil today and about the expected 1.7 quarts went in. Car's driving fine again, shifting well, same moderate whine when loading up second. But all-in-all, feeling like it's ready to go.
Thanks again for the detailed reply - much appreciated.
